Acoustic Pickup Installations
Carlos Juan VIP Doble:
For Nyon and Steel String guitars the best sounding pickup is the Carlos Juan VIP Doble system. This is a dual pickup system with a coaxial transducer under the saddle and a carbon fiber transducer attached to the soundboard inside the guitar. This system has excellent string to string balance and feedback rejection. The SBT (soundboard transducer) blends in a nice woody sound to the UST (under saddle transducer). The SBT also does an excellent job of picking up any type of technique that includes tapping the soundboard of the guitar. Many system do not offer an effective way to achieve this. For example, RMC and Barbera pickup systems transmit very little soundboard tapping. The VIP Doble system has two individual volume controls mounted just inside the soundhole. This allows the player to adjust the pickup blend on the fly. I typically run my blend at 60% UST and 40% SBT. Sometimes even as much as 50/50. To get the best blended sound of the two I recommend using the Radial Engineering Phazer to help align the phase of the two pickups. The Carlos System is $600 for the pickup and installation. If your guitar is shipped to me return shipping will be an additional charge. For shipping I use FedEx or USPS. USPS can cost considerably less than FedEx or UPS for shipping your guitar.
